But I've asked my folks back in Brazil to uncover some information about the family. Here it goes: My greatgrandfather (the one who left Slovenia for Brazil) is Anton Cesnik, son of Martin Cesnik and Maria Blazic, and grandson of Walontin Koreni and Lola Cesnik. He was born in Studenec, Postojna, Austro-Hungarian Empire, circa 1859. He married the former Maria Nagode (daughter of Iolann Nagode and Hnllona Kobal) in May 31, 1880, in the church of Saint John the Baptist in Krein, Diocese of Laibach. They had four sons: Joannes, Antonio, Victorio, and Rodolpho. Rodolpho was my grandfather. He married the former Annita Colpani and they had two sons and one daughter: Roberto, Cecilia, and Fabio. Roberto married the former Clelia Stolf, and they had two sons: Carlos Eduardo and Paulo Henrique. And here I show up! My goal is to make my home page into Cestnik/Cestnick/Cesnik/Cessnik/Chesnick/etc. Central and post all our e-mail addresses in one place so we could contact/find each other. Would you mind if I posted you there? And spread the word... Of course not! That's a great idea! Well, let me know if the information I'm sending to you make sense. And if there is any link to some of the data you have. Take care, and Lep pozdrav, Carlos Dear Carlos (or as they would say in our homeland, Dragi Carlos), Hey, this is exciting. Thanks for replying. According to my link in Slovenia, Bojan Cestnik, who spells it MY WAY :-), the name is pronounced, I believe, like Zesstnigg. (He says it is difficult for Americans to pronounce. I pronounce it like Sessnick; there is no "h" sound like you indicate. But most people put it in!!!) We were all in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I found a name something like Unter Steiermark. I discovered that meant the southern part of the county (?) Styria in Austria. That's the Northern part of Slovenia now. Bojan says we originated in the same area. He said times were difficult in the late 1800s. My great grandfather came to the US around 1902 and ended up in Montana as a coal miner. I have found a group of Canadian Cestniks as well. Up there, they added a c in the last part. I heard it was something about Canadian customs, but they claim the correct spelling is Cestnik as well. They have a daughter down in Austrailia who is a professor. There is also another group of Canadian Cestnicks in the Nova Scotia area. I believe they went to Germany first. I also discovered (or he found my page) a Peter Cestnik who is in Germany. I have all of these things on my Cestnik History Page. Today, I decided to try another spelling and came up with several who spell it your way. I did find a Cesnik in Slovenia today as well. I sent a note. It would be neat if we could tie us all together some how. My goal is to make my home page into Cestnik/Cestnick/Cesnik/Cessnik/Chesnick/etc. Central and post all our e-mail addresses in one place so we could contact/find each other. Would you mind if I posted you there? And spread the word... Best regards, or as Bojan taught me, Lep pozdrav, Terry Carlos E. S. Cesnik wrote: Hi Terry! Very interesting!!! My ancestors are from Slovenia as well (at the time, Austrian-Hungarian Empire), but went to Brazil at the end of last century (I need to check on the dates for sure). The name should have had a "v" on top of the "e" to give the sound "Chesnik". In terms of spelling, my grandfather was "Cesnick", but he claimed the extra "c" was a mistake. I only browsed your home page quickly but it seems that we may have a distant link! I'll try to get more information from the Brazilian folks and I'll get back to you.
